We invite authors to submit abstracts of up to 750-words for the upcoming 2025 Taiwan STS Association Annual Conference.
Conference Theme
The conference will explore the multifaceted ways in which science and technology are represented and communicated to the public. Communicating science through exhibitions, displays, magazines, and so forth is how supporters of science and technology build public trust, popularity, and authority. Putting science on display makes science visible in tangible ways that can connect audience and science emotionally as well as intellectually and ideologically. How science and technology are represented can have far-reaching ramifications for public comprehension of what it is; for instance, potentially forging and transforming social relations between scientific communities, the public and the state. To understand the various ways of representing science and technology is to understand how different groups are situated or position themselves in relation to a particular science and technology in sociohistorical context. Through what forms and objects are science and technology communicated to audiences? How do scientists effectively communicate with non-specialist audiences? How does science win or lose the trust of society? These are intricately entwined issues that demand research and discussion. This conference aims to inform and enhance STS theoretical developments, interdisciplinary innovations, science and technology education, and strategies for popularizing science to enhance public trust.
