Dear members TAIWAN STS ASSOCIATIONfrom Taiwan,
Have a nice summer.
The annual meeting of the Society this year titled “Technology on Islands and Chains, Technology as an Island and Chain” was successfully held on June 27 and 28 at the Yongming Campus of National Chengchi University. We would like to thank the faculty and students of the Yongming University of Transport Science and Technology Institute for their full commitment to the annual meeting. We hereby extend our highest appreciation to the excellent team at Yongming University of Transport Science and Technology Institute! (Report from the Yongming University of Transport Science and Technology Institute:https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Ea8P4sAgM/ )
This year’s conference featured 31 sessions, including 69 papers presented, 10 themed forums and discussions, 5 poster papers presented, and a book launch event. A total of 78 speakers participated, with more than 205 registrants from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the United States, and other countries. The conference’s diverse and rich topics included environmental, energy and sustainability, semiconductor industry, industrial technology history, technology governance, AI governance, biomedical research, healthcare, reproductive technology, multi-species perspectives, technology objects, local knowledge, indigenous STS, platform governance and digital surveillance, infrastructure, science communication, and medical diplomacy, among others. The two-day seminar witnessed the vitality of the Taiwan STS community. (For the agenda, please see the association’s website.)
The opening forum “Give Me an East Asia, I Will Raise the World” invited Tomiko Yamaguchi (Yamaguchi Fuko), Chihyung Joen (Chihyung Hun), Professor Wu Jiaolian, the co-convener of TAIWAN STS ASSOCIATIONthe 2027 4S, and Professor Guo Wenhua, the president of the 4S, to serve as discussants to discuss the development and review of East Asian STS, especially the significance of East Asian studies to global STS research. The emphasis of the key speakers was varied and the content was quite rich; there were also some sparks of interest (for the report, please see the social information at the end of the article). Subsequently, we also signed a MOU with the 4S through the energy of the opening forum, in order to facilitate the subsequent hosting of the 2027 4S in Taiwan.
In addition to participating in the forum, Professor Chih-Heng Chien also brought the documentary film Hug Me Tight to the annual meeting, sparking a lively discussion about robots and care. Professor Yamaguchi Fuko also delivered a speech after the annual meeting (June 29) at the National Yang-Ming University of Technology titled “Who Owns the Future? Expectations, Forecasts, and the Politics of Social Order.” As you may already know, the 2027 International 4S Conference will be held in Taiwan, and the Association is working on the local preparations. The conference is tentatively scheduled to be held from August 25 to 28 at the Bojia Classroom at National Taiwan University. The related preparations have been ongoing since July 2024, including organizing a group to draft open panel proposals. We sincerely invite members to submit their contributions for the 2027 4S. Details regarding the 4S team formation and submission, especially the open panels that promote international networking, can be found on the 4S website:https://4sonline.org/call_for_open_panels_toronto.php
As usual, we hold a general meeting during the annual meeting. Important tasks include the election of new board members and the awarding of doctoral dissertation awards. The new board members for the 2026-2028 term have been announced on the association website. We would like to thank the previous board members for their contributions to the smooth running of the association, including the annual meeting, the doctoral dissertation awards, the Wang Yufeng Award for Oral Presentation, and community media management. We also welcome and thank the new board members for their commitment to the association and the great responsibilities ahead in 2027. Furthermore, the emerging generation of STS researchers continues to shine, congratulations to the award winners! We would also like to thank the reviewers of the doctoral dissertation awards for their hard work. (The award announcement was made on the association website before the annual meeting.)
